Why Most Fat Burners Do Not Work
We sell products that sit in this category, which makes this an awkward article to write and a necessary one.
Start with the arithmetic
Fat loss requires using more energy than you take in. Everything else is detail.
A supplement can influence that equation in three possible ways. It can slightly raise the energy you burn. It can slightly reduce what you eat. It can slightly reduce what you absorb. Each of those is real and each of them is small.
The most generous honest estimate of what the best evidenced ingredients do is something in the region of fifty to a hundred extra calories a day. That is a biscuit. It is not nothing across a year, but it is completely swamped by whether you actually ate at a deficit, and that is the thing the marketing never puts next to it.
The ingredients, honestly
Caffeine. The one with real evidence. It raises metabolic rate modestly and reduces appetite slightly. Tolerance builds, so the effect shrinks over weeks. It is also in most fat burners at doses high enough to matter, which is worth knowing before you add a pre-workout on top.
Green tea extract. Some evidence, mostly small effects, mostly in combination with caffeine. Worth noting that high dose green tea extract has been associated with liver injury in rare cases, which is a reason not to stack several products containing it.
Capsaicin. A small thermogenic effect with reasonable evidence. Very small.
Garcinia cambogia, raspberry ketones, CLA. All heavily marketed. None with convincing human evidence for fat loss.
BHB and exogenous ketones. Do not cause fat loss on their own, for reasons we went through in what BHB does and does not do. They have a legitimate narrower use.
What our own products are, described accurately
9-5 SHRED is built around supporting a ketogenic approach rather than being a fat burner in the thermogenic sense. It makes most sense alongside a low carbohydrate diet that you are actually following. On its own, it is not the mechanism, and our product page states this more strongly than we would write it today.
We would rather you understood that before buying than after.
The things that actually determine the outcome
Protein intake, because it keeps you fuller and protects muscle while you lose weight. Resistance training, for the same reason. Sleep, because short sleep reliably increases appetite and cravings the following day. Daily movement outside the gym, which varies between people far more than structured exercise does. And a deficit you can maintain for months rather than one you can maintain for nine days.
Every one of those is larger than every supplement in this category combined. That is not modesty, it is the actual ranking.
A word on how this goes wrong
Fat burners tend to attract stacking. Two products with caffeine, plus coffee, plus a pre-workout. That is how people end up with a racing heart, poor sleep and worse results, since the poor sleep then drives the appetite up.
Add up the caffeine across everything you take in a day before you add anything new.
And if thinking about your weight has started to take up more room in your head than you want it to, or eating has become something you feel anxious or guilty about, that is worth talking to someone about. It is far more common than people assume, and it is not something a different supplement solves.
The summary
This category can add a small amount at the edges of something that is already working. It cannot create the result. Any product suggesting otherwise is describing an outcome no supplement has been shown to produce.
