Probiotics, Prebiotics and Enzymes: Which Does What
These three get treated as interchangeable in marketing copy and they do entirely different jobs. Understanding the difference takes about two minutes and saves you from buying the wrong one.
Probiotics are the bacteria
Live microorganisms that you swallow, intended to join the enormous population already living in your gut.
Two things are worth knowing. Strain matters more than count. A product advertising fifty billion CFU of an unnamed strain tells you less than one advertising ten billion of a named, studied strain, because the research is done on specific strains rather than on probiotics as a category. Look for the full name, something like Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, where that last part is the strain.
The second thing is that survival is a real problem. Stomach acid kills a good proportion of what you swallow, which is why delayed release capsules exist and why CFU counts on a label are usually measured at manufacture rather than at the point it reaches your intestine.
Probiotic effects also tend to be temporary. These are visitors rather than permanent residents in most cases. Stop taking them and the population drifts back toward where it was.
Prebiotics are the food
Prebiotics are fibers your body cannot digest but your gut bacteria can. Inulin, found in chicory root, is the most common one you will see on a label.
The logic is straightforward. Rather than sending in new bacteria, you feed the ones you already have. That population is already adapted to you, which is an argument some researchers find more compelling than the probiotic approach.
One honest warning. Prebiotics commonly cause gas and bloating in the first week or two, sometimes quite noticeably, because you are feeding a fermentation process. This is not a sign something is wrong. It usually settles. But it does mean starting at a low dose rather than the full serving, and it is the single most common reason people quit a gut supplement in week one.
You can also just eat them. Onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, slightly underripe bananas and oats all contain prebiotic fiber.
Enzymes are the tools
Digestive enzymes break food into pieces small enough to absorb. Protease handles protein, lipase handles fat, amylase handles carbohydrate, lactase handles lactose.
Your body makes these already. A supplement is adding to a supply that exists, which is why the case for them is strongest in specific situations rather than as a general daily habit. Enzyme production declines somewhat with age. Some people produce less lactase than others. And a very large or unusually rich meal can outpace what you produce in the moment.
If your digestion is fine, enzymes are unlikely to do much. That is worth saying on a page where we sell them.
Which one do you need
Gas and bloating that follow specific foods point toward enzymes, or toward removing the food.
A gut that feels generally out of sorts, particularly after a course of antibiotics, points toward probiotics.
Wanting to improve things steadily over months rather than fix something acute points toward prebiotics and, more than anything, toward eating a wider range of plants.
