Bloating Is Not One Thing

Bloating is one of those words that covers so much ground it stops being useful. Four people saying it can mean four completely different things, which is why generic advice about it so rarely works.

Before you buy anything, it is worth working out which one you actually have.

1. You ate a lot, quickly

The most common and the least interesting. A large meal eaten fast, with air swallowed along the way, produces genuine distension that resolves on its own in a few hours.

If your bloating happens after big meals and is gone by the next morning, this is it. Eating more slowly does more than any supplement, and it is free. Fizzy drinks and chewing gum both add swallowed air, so they make it worse.

2. Something specific is not agreeing with you

If it happens reliably after particular foods, you are looking at an intolerance rather than general digestive sluggishness.

Dairy is the usual candidate, since lactase production declines with age in most of the world's population. Beans, onions, garlic, wheat and certain fruits are common too, and those tend to cluster under the FODMAP heading.

The way to find out is boring and effective. Write down what you eat and when the bloating happens for two weeks. Patterns show up faster than people expect, and you end up with something specific to act on rather than a vague sense that food is the problem.

3. Your digestion is genuinely sluggish

This is the one where food seems to sit, where you feel full long after you should, and where the discomfort builds through the day rather than arriving after a single meal.

Enzyme production does decline with age, and some people produce less of certain enzymes to begin with. This is the situation where a digestive enzyme blend has a plausible role. GUTLAB 42 pairs a DigeZyme enzyme blend with prebiotic inulin and probiotic cultures, which covers the three angles at once. We went through what each of those actually does in probiotics, prebiotics and enzymes, because the three get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

4. Constipation, described politely

A lot of what gets called bloating is this, and people are understandably reluctant to say so. If you are not going regularly, the distension has an obvious cause and no enzyme blend will fix it.

Fiber and water, in that order, and more walking than you think. If it is persistent, that is a doctor conversation rather than a supplement one.

What to do first, in order

Eat slower and smaller for a week. Keep a short food note for two weeks. Check whether you are drinking enough water and moving enough. Only after that does it make sense to add something, and by then you will know which of the four you are dealing with, which means you will know what to add.

Most people skip the first three and buy something for the fourth problem they do not have.

When it is not a supplement question at all

Bloating that comes with weight loss you did not intend, blood, persistent pain, vomiting, or a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts more than a couple of weeks needs a doctor rather than a product. The same goes for bloating that is genuinely constant rather than coming and going.

We would rather lose the sale than have you treat something that needs looking at properly.
