Exogenous Ketones: What BHB Does and Does Not Do

Exogenous ketones are one of the more misunderstood products on the market, and the misunderstanding is specific enough to be worth clearing up in a couple of paragraphs.

What ketosis is

When carbohydrate intake is low enough for long enough, your liver starts converting fat into ketone bodies, which your brain and muscles can use as fuel. Beta-hydroxybutyrate, BHB, is the main one.

Getting there takes a few days of genuinely low carbohydrate intake, and the first stretch is where people feel rough. Headache, fatigue, irritability, the thing commonly called keto flu.

What exogenous ketones do

An exogenous ketone supplement gives you BHB directly, usually bound to a mineral salt. Blood ketone levels rise within an hour or so.

Here is the distinction that matters, and it is the one the category tends to blur. Raising blood ketones is not the same as burning your own body fat. In ketosis from diet, your ketones come from your fat. With a supplement, they come from the tub.

Your body will use what is available. Providing ketones from outside does not itself increase how much of your own fat you break down, and there is some evidence it can briefly reduce it, since your body has less reason to produce its own while external ketones are circulating.

So a supplement that puts you in a state of elevated blood ketones has not put you into fat burning. Those are two different things wearing the same word.

Where they are genuinely useful

The transition. The most defensible use. Taking BHB during the first days of a low carb diet can take the edge off the adaptation period, which is the stretch where most people quit. BHB 42 pairs BHB salts with MCT powder, and this is the situation it makes most sense in.

Getting back after a break. A weekend off plan means starting the adaptation again. Exogenous ketones shorten that.

Mental clarity during adaptation. Some people find the fog of the first week lifts with them. This is reported consistently enough to be worth mentioning, though it is not strongly evidenced.

What they will not do

They will not let you eat carbohydrate and stay in ketosis. Eat a meaningful amount of carbohydrate and your body uses it, because it is the easier fuel, regardless of what you drank.

They will not cause fat loss on their own. Fat loss requires an energy deficit, and that is true on a ketogenic diet just as it is on any other.

Worth knowing that our own product page currently says it boosts weight loss, and that is a stronger claim than we think the evidence supports. We would rather point that out here than leave you to find the gap.

Practical notes

BHB salts are bound to sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium, which means a serving carries a meaningful amount of mineral, sodium in particular. If you are watching sodium for any reason, read the label.

Take them on a relatively empty stomach for absorption. Large doses cause digestive upset in a lot of people, so start small.

And they taste unpleasant. Almost all of them do. That is chemistry rather than a formulation failure.

The honest framing

Exogenous ketones are a tool for making a ketogenic diet easier to start and easier to return to. That is a real and useful job. They are not a way to get the results of the diet without doing the diet, and the products that imply otherwise are the reason the category has the reputation it has.

If it is fat loss you are after specifically, why most fat burners do not work is the more useful piece.
