What “Detox” Actually Means

We sell products that people buy for detox reasons, so this is going to be an unusual article to find on this site. It is still the honest version.

You already have a detox system and it is very good

Your liver converts fat soluble compounds into water soluble ones so your body can get rid of them. Your kidneys filter your entire blood volume many times a day. Your lungs, your skin and your gut all take part. This runs continuously, without instruction, and it does not need activating.

When a product claims to detox you, the reasonable question is which toxin, and by what mechanism. Most of the time there is no answer to either, because the word is doing marketing work rather than describing a process.

If your liver or kidneys genuinely were not working, you would be seriously unwell and in a hospital rather than shopping. That is not a rhetorical flourish, it is the actual clinical picture.

So why do people feel better on a cleanse?

Usually because of what else changed at the same time.

A typical cleanse week involves drinking much more water, cutting alcohol, cutting ultra processed food, eating more vegetables, and often sleeping more because the whole thing came with an intention to look after yourself. Any one of those would make someone feel better. All five at once certainly will.

The powder gets the credit. The behavior change did the work. We think you are better off knowing that, because it tells you what to keep doing when the tub runs out.

What these products genuinely are

Strip the word detox away and what you usually have left is a concentrated vegetable and algae powder. That is not nothing.

Smooth Reset is built on spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass and barley grass. Those are nutrient dense foods with real vitamin, mineral and antioxidant content. Sea Moss is a seaweed that is naturally high in iodine, alongside bladderwrack and burdock root.

Both are reasonable things to take if your diet is short on variety. Neither is removing a toxin from your body, and we would rather describe them accurately and have you buy them for the right reason.

Two specific cautions

Sea moss is naturally high in iodine, and iodine is one of those nutrients where more is not better. Too much can affect thyroid function just as too little can. If you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, talk to your doctor before taking it. This is a real interaction, not a boilerplate warning.

And be wary of anything sold as a cleanse that works primarily as a laxative. Rapid weight change on those products is water and gut contents. It is not fat, it comes straight back, and doing it repeatedly is not good for you.

What actually supports the system you have

Drink enough water so your kidneys have what they need. Drink less alcohol, since that is the single biggest load you can take off your liver. Eat enough fiber, because that is how a good deal of processed waste actually leaves. Sleep, which is when a fair amount of the maintenance happens. Move.

None of that is exciting and all of it works. A greens powder can sit on top of it usefully. It cannot substitute for it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.

If you are weighing up whether a greens powder earns a place at all, we went through that in do you actually need a greens powder.
